I found this painting in my storage after 9 years it has been there rolled up, it does have cracks and need restoration, This is a genuine old painting, the artist is James Ensor, This work is an early work, 1875 when james was 15 or earlier,wheres all the paintings from 1875-1879? who else paints crowds with masks and carnival scenes with religious? i found one work from 1876 titled bathing house, just when exactly did james ensor begin painting? he did grow up in his mothers curiosity shop painting all her store items, when did he decide to become an artist? and where are ALL HIS EARLY PAINTINGS?? ANY CLUES?? ive searched a long time for forgers and artists that would mimic james ensor and found nothing, I believe he painted this 13-15 years old , as theres hardly any of his works out there for comparison, his authorship is all over this artwork, if youd like to try to prove me wrong; go ahead and try as the facts are building up as im preparing a facts sheet on this rare find, this was an earlier work as i found information his early works were gloomy, in my opinion this is a religious scene: in the lower left we see an authority figure holding a ceptor, and is this ponteous pilate sentencing jesus? is this the crowd waiting outside? yelling "crucify him" as Ensor used masks to depict his feelings of disgust for the actions of humanity;
he also used a varnish over oil paint, and in this case he added a fixative to adhere the water colours on top, this would prevent the water colours from peeling.
there is other media such as metallic gold [which is THE most expensive pigment] and other pigments. this artwork definately needs spectrometry analysis and infa red x-ray, signature not found as of yet but i have some special lighting i will look examine it later today, canvas is very old, possibly burlap? the cracks are from being rolled up, the pics are sort of blury because of the reflection of the glaze, Ensor is often referred to as the 'painter of masks', as many of his subjects have a grotesque mask-like face, set in a carnival background, but in fact he created drawings, paintings and prints in a variety of different styles which makes it difficult to attach him to any one movement. His works are often satirical, crudely painted with bright expressive paint and brushwork. ill have to take better pics where it doesnt reflect as much, price is firm, and cash only, this is an unresearched artwork i bought from an estate sale in east windsor CT in 2007, it has been in storage ever since,in april of this year i had my friend mail it to me and ive been researching it since, found many facts and relevance,
there is some info i found on google books about using a glaze for a bonding material for painting watercolour on top, this technique was learned from old masters
